Racing with Tacoma Corvette Club

For most club members, when the word “racing” is mentioned they think of NASCAR, ILMS, or F1.  Racing in Tacoma Corvette Club can actually mean several different types of “cars at speed” activities.  Within the Corvette club we have members involved in four basic categories of racing.

1.      Autocross:  run against the clock through a miniature road-course of cones.  Typical runs are in the 50 – 60 second range.  Top speed generally does not exceed 70 mph.  Considered to be a “safe” place to get some real good driving experience.

2.      Track Lapping:  driving on a full-size road-course race track, i.e., Pacific Raceway, Portland International.  Often referred to as driving schools, a good place to drive your car “at speed” with other cars on the track in a safe and controlled manner.  Safety is controlled by the sponsor of the event.  Choose your sponsors wisely ! !

3.      Time Trials:  driving on a full-size road-course race track in a competitive mode against the clock.  This does require some additional safety gear, however, is still considered relatively safe from on-track car damage.  Passing is in a controlled manner during practice/qualify sessions.  Top speeds range from 130 – 150 mph, depending on the track design.  Competing at this level will cause some “wear and tear” to your car, i.e, brakes, tires, etc.

4.      Door to Door Racing:   This is full-fledged racing where “stuff” can happen as people are diving into corners trying to out-brake their competitors for position.  Setting-up a car for racing is a significant effort with full roll-cages, extensive parts removal (to reduce weight), etc.  Full racing requires a significant amount of time, effort, and dedication, not to mention a good deal of money.
